Call for suggestions for entries to the “Magen David” Exhibition

at the Safed “Sun Blessing” Festival

Suggestion for an artistic program for the “Sun Blessing” Festival Project

This project is based on an event that takes place according to an ancient Jewish tradition, once in 28 years, at the time when the sun returns to its position on the day of the Creation of the World.

The blessing itself will take place at the exact time: Passover Eve, 5769, April 8th, 2009.

Humanity takes for granted that the sun is our world’s chief source of life and energy, but in our era, there are more and more signs that the human race is gradually destroying the earth upon which we live. In the past 28 years, pollution has increased to a level that threatens the earth’s very existence.

The “Sun Blessing” Festival will serve as a platform for the union of worlds, cultures and traditions, and will promote understanding among the numerous variations of Jewish life that may be found in the Holy Land. Its purpose is to promote cultural merging, learning new ways of thinking, receiving inspiration for alternative ways of creative development and finding new ways to apply existing ideas.

The mystic nature of the Passover festival, together with this project, that will take place on Passover, 2009 in a city that is a source of inspiration for the universal “Kabbalah movement, will create a unique atmosphere of “taking responsibility” for world renewal by means of its most precious source – the sun.

Zefat, with her mountains, valleys, forests and water sources, has inspired the greatest rabbis, Tannaim and Kabbalists, who discovered, wrote and taught here the secrets of the Kabbalah and the spirit and power of Jewish mysticism.

From Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai to the Blessed Ari, from “Seder Tu B’shvat” and the “Lecha Dodi” melody to Seder Kabbalat Shabbat,” all were inspired by the righteous ones who bestowed upon the city an air of holiness and about whom it was said that the Holy Spirit dwelled among them.

In the framework of the project, we hope to create positive energy by involving a large population in the “Sun Blessing” project, which will be imbued with the spirit of the “old times” and will reach as far as Jerusalem, where the “Shirat Hayam” prayer will take place simultaneously at the Wailing Wall.

The aim of this suggestion from the field of plastic art is to allow several artists from Israel and the world to be part of this project, thus becoming ambassadors for the entire event all over Israel and the world.

(The following description relates to one part of the program only. A professional exhibition will be held on the topic “Blessing the Sun.” A separate letter will be sent regarding it.)

2. The “Magen David” Partition

The festival’s events will occur in all parts of the city, but the main ones will take place in the Citadel and the Southern Spring, from a mass burning of the “hametz” using magnifying glasses and the sun’s heat to a performance of Rabbi Karlebach’s songs, a song of praise, etc. Some of these events will require a separation between men and woman by a special standing partition. For this purpose, artists in Israel and abroad are invited to submit entries on the topic of the “Magen David.” One advantage of such a production is that every artist will “market” the entire event by his or her participation.

The partition will be 20 meters long and 2 meters high.
